Day One

“Day One” is a beginning. “Day One” of school . . . a diet . . . a new relationship . . . a rediscovered relationship . . . an exercise program . . . a new job. “Day One” is filled with enthusiasm, promise and possibilities. It is energized with a can-do mentality that nothing can get in the way of success. Barriers to the goal are non-existent or at least manageable.

Sometimes our “Day One” is sparked by a period of frustration and the need for change. It can offer us fresh start and a chance for a new beginning.

After the enthusiasm of “Day One” subsides the reality of our goal and its challenges set in. We allow the obstructions into focus and those obstacles… Continue reading

Rutgers Day

What a fabulous day we had yesterday. It was Rutger’s day, which all us “old timers” know is really Ag Field Day! We were able to spend the entire day with my son, Pete and his girlfriend, Melissa. It made me feel so happy that they actually WANTED to spend their Saturday off with us. They could have chosen to do anything else with their friends from 10:30am to 8:30pm on a sunny Saturday and THEY CHOSE US!!! How great is that?! It wasn’t always that way and I’m very grateful that it is now!

Though no one can go back and make a brand new start,Anyone can start from now and make a brand new future!

Loving What’s Right on Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day!

We grow, either individually or together, not by hating what’s wrong, but by loving what’s right.

Very often through the frustrations of life we focus on those negative things that push our buttons. We forget the things that gave us joy about those we love most, particularly about our significant other.

When we fall in love we seem to admire the attributes in our prospective partner that we don’t see in ourselves. The old saying is “opposites attract”. Often over time those things that once captivated us about the “love of our life” become the traits we grow to despise! What causes us to scorn the things we once admired and the person we once loved? Perhaps it’s because we struggle to be what… Continue reading

Forget Auld Lang Syne

Each New Years Eve we sing that same song about old acquaintances.  “Auld Lang Syne” is a very old Scottish song written down by Robert Burns in the 1700’s. Guy Lombardo, who first sang it at midnight on January 1, 1929 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City, made it a popular New Years song. It was played by him, on a live broadcast, until 1976.

But what actually does that phrase in the chorus mean?  The words ‘Auld Lang Syne’ literally translates from old Scottish dialect meaning ‘Old Long Ago’, but one of the best translations of “auld lang syne” is “times gone by”.  What good times have gone by for you?  Perhaps a blind date, you didn’t want to go on, that turned out to be… Continue reading

Chinese Parable

A long time ago in China, a girl named Li-Li got married & went to live with her husband and mother-in-law. In a very short time, Li-Li found that she couldn’t get along with her mother-in-law at all. Their personalities were very different, and Li-Li was angered by many of her mother-in-law’s habits. In addition, she criticized Li-Li constantly.

Days passed and weeks passed. Li-Li and her mother-in-law never stopped arguing and fighting. But what made the situation even worse was that, according to ancient Chinese tradition, Li-Li had to bow to her mother-in-law and obey her every wish. All the anger and unhappiness in the house was causing Li-Li’s poor husband great distress.

Finally, Li-Li could not stand her mother-in-law’s bad temper and dictatorship any longer, and… Continue reading
